Does Herpes Cause Cancer?

You may have asked the question "Can herpes cause cancer?" or possibly have heard someone ask "Does herpes make you someone more likely to get cancer" On this page we'll give the answer to this question.

Fact: Herpes Does Not Cause Cancer.

Both types of herpes, Type-1 (Oral Herpes) and Type-2 (Genital Herpes) do not cause any cancers. This is the good news and a fact.

The reason this question comes up a lot is that the herpes virus may be confused with HPV, or the human papillomavirus. HPV is the cause of many cancers, including cervical cancers in women, or penile cancer in men. HPV can also cause anal or oral cancers in both sexes.

However, there are some studies that show a correlation between people having Type-2 genital herpes and cancer. The reason is that people with HSV-2 (genital herpes) are more at risk to contracting other types of sexually transmitted diseases. As a result, they are more likely to contract HPV, which does cause cancer.

Hence, herpes by itself in no way causes cancer. However, the presence of herpes does make it more possible to contract HPV which does cause cancer. And that is the facts related to herpes and cancer.

In conclusion:

can herpes cause cancer
